First appointment

You’ll be given a medical questionnaire to fill out, and have an opportunity to adjust any personal details on your file. You’ll also receive a full examination by the dentist, which may include digital photographs and x-rays, along with lots of questions about your lifestyle, general health and oral hygiene habits. If a dental problem is identified, this will be discussed fully.

Treatment planning

If further treatment is required, a plan will be drawn up that details clearly everything you can expect from our service, and the costs involved. You will have as much time as you need to ask questions and consider your options – including dental finance. You’ll also be advised of the aftercare you can expect, and if you’ll need to take any time off to recover from treatment. Once you have confirmed you’re happy with your treatment plan, treatment can proceed – in some instances during the same appointment, especially if the dentist needs to eliminate pain. In other cases, you may need to return for a future appointment at a convenient time.

Post treatment

We won’t send you home after treatment without a clear understanding of what you need to do to keep your teeth and gums clean and infection-free. We will recall you for follow-up checks and hygiene appointments, and will endeavour to see you as soon as possible if you have any concerns following your treatment.

Dimitar graduated as a master-dentist from the Medical University of Plovdiv, Bulgaria in 2004. For several years he worked in fully private practice, that he and his wife had established. During this period, he attended many courses and hands-on programs until he established his areas of interest in dentistry-conservative cosmetic dentistry and endodontics (root canal treatments). Since 2009 he has been working and living in Newbury. He kept mastering his skills in Conservative aesthetic dentistry by attending many courses including an Advanced aesthetic course at Eastman Dental Institute, London. In 2013 he enrolled at the University of Warwick and in 2016 attained an MSc (master’s degree) in Endodontics. In his last year at the Warwick University he was the president of the Postgraduate students at the University.

Dr Johan Malan

GDC Number: 67776 DDM (PLOVDIV)

Hi I am Dr Johan Malan. I grew up in Worcester in the winelands area of South Africa where I matriculated. I then worked for ten years for the South African Railways as clerk. I have always dreamed of a career in medicine and at the age of 28 I took the risk to resign my work, sold my house, and with a loan from my bank enrolled at Pretoria University for dentistry. I decided on dentistry as I loved working with my hands, doing woodwork and some metalwork and figured to combine that passion with my dream of a career in medicine.

On completion of my degree I moved with my family (my daughter Sonya was born during my third year in university) to the U.K. to work in London. After four years I relocated back to South Africa to start my own private practice in Paarl. (Again in wine country!) During my years there I was approached by a dental practice in Newbury to work there while they transitioned from NHS to private dentistry, and this took much longer than planned so that It was four years later before I resumed work in my own practice in South Africa. I was again approached to work in the U.K., This time at my present employer in Thatcham. As I had really enjoyed my previous stay in Thatcham and had friends locally (and was also in the process of retiring) I did not hesitate to take up this post.

I feel really privileged to have a career that I enjoy as much. The daily contact with many different people, especially now I have been here for going on two years and is developing better relations with my patients is very rewarding. As rewarding is the work itself, giving me opportunity to daily develop my skills, even after all these years in the profession, I also enjoy reading up and studying on many areas of dentistry for further professional development.

We want to make the world a better place

Whether it’s getting involved in our community or working to help others further afield, we take our social responsibility seriously. After all, what’s the point of providing a service in Thatcham if we don’t engage with everything else that’s going on here? We’ve found that giving our team the time and means to volunteer and raise money for good causes – together or individually, at home or abroad – makes them feel great about giving back, and creates bonds that no office party can compete with! As well as volunteering and fundraising for Bridge2Aid, our team aims to make a regular commitment to local causes, too.
